Axel picked up the parchment and studied it . He tried to arrange every combination of letters so that they could form Latin words, but he couldn’ t make any sense of it .
JWhile Axel was sitting in front of the window, he saw some Latin words which he knew on the parchment and they meaned " a crater of the Earth " .
JAxel decided not to tell Professor Lidenbrock about the secret message because he would make a dangerous journey and would take him . Axel was going to burn the parchment when the door opened and his uncle appeared .
JAxel decided to tell Professor Lidenbrock about the secret message because he felt sorry for his uncle who hadn’ t eaten or slept for two days, his face was white and his eyes were red .
JAxel thought that the journey to the centre of the Earth would be dangerous and impossible because it is very hot .
JThe secret message was:
Go down into the crater of Sneffels which
the shadow of Scartaris touches before July .
Then you will reach the centre of the Earth .

JSneffels was an extinct volcano in Iceland . It wasn’ t hot because it hasn’ t erupted since 1229 . It has several craters, but only one leads to the centre of the Earth .
JScartaris was a high mountain in Iceland . It casts its shadow over the crater that leads to the centre of the Earth at the end of June .
4JProfessor Lidenbrock showed Axel the places that Arne Saknussemm had written about on the map of Iceland on atlas .
JAt last, Axel told Professor Lidenbrock of the danger of the journey to the centre of the Earth, but his uncle decided to go there together .
